Position Summary
A leading energy management and building solutions provider is seeking a Controls Engineer to support the design, programming, commissioning, and implementation of building automation system (BAS) projects. This role works closely with project development, engineering, and installation teams to deliver high-performance automation solutions for commercial, industrial, and municipal clients.
The Controls Engineer will contribute to all phases of BAS projects, including system design, control sequence development, programming, commissioning, and system integration. This position requires collaboration with electricians, mechanical contractors, and project managers to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards.
This role combines engineering, field support, and customer interaction and plays a critical part in delivering turnkey energy efficiency and building controls solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Controls Engineering & System Design
- Develop control system designs for BAS including HVAC equipment, energy systems, and related building systems.
- Create control drawings, system architecture diagrams, and sequences of operation.
- Support specification and selection of control hardware, sensors, controllers, and network devices.
- Review project plans and specifications to ensure proper integration of control systems.
Programming & System Integration
- Program and configure BAS controllers and supervisory platforms.
- Develop system graphics, dashboards, and trending tools for building operators.
- Integrate third-party systems such as chillers, boilers, VFDs, meters, and laboratory equipment.
- Configure and troubleshoot BAS communication protocols including BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and IP-based networks.
Commissioning & Field Support
- Assist with startup, commissioning, and functional testing of BAS systems.
- Work with field technicians, electricians, and mechanical teams to verify proper installation and operation.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot system issues during commissioning and post-installation.
- Verify systems operate in accordance with project specifications and sequences of operation.
Project & Customer Support
- Provide technical support during project development and assist sales with system concepts and retrofit recommendations.
- Participate in project meetings and support project managers with scheduling, coordination, and documentation.
- Deliver customer training on BAS operation and system functionality.
- Prepare project documentation including as-built drawings, system narratives, and close-out packages.
Controls Group Development
- Support standardization of internal controls engineering practices.
- Assist with development of templates, programming standards, and internal tools.
- Coordinate equipment procurement and ensure timely material delivery.
- Maintain strong working relationships with customers, contractors, and equipment vendors.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
Experience with building automation platforms such as:
- Tridium Niagara Framework (JACE / Niagara N4)
- Johnson Controls FX / Facility Explorer
- Honeywell
- Distech Controls
Additional preferred knowledge:
- BAS controller programming and configuration
- HVAC system operation and control strategies
- Control theory and automatic temperature control systems
- BAS graphics development and data trending
- IP-based networking and system integration
- Communication protocols: BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, N2
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of building automation systems and HVAC equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and control diagrams.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with customers, contractors, and internal teams.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience working with building automation or control systems.
- Experience in the HVAC or construction industry preferred.
- Journeyman or Master Electrician license is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally to project sites.
