Position Overview
The Service Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall performance of a commercial HVAC and mechanical service department. This position oversees field operations, service leadership staff, financial performance, safety, fleet management, and technician development. The Service Manager plays a critical role in coaching leaders, improving operational efficiency, driving profitability, and ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery to commercial customers.

This role is well suited for an experienced commercial HVAC professional who excels in operational leadership, team development, and performance accountability.

Key Responsibilities
Service Department Leadership 

  • Oversee, manage, and coach service leadership staff including Service Sales Engineers, Contract Administrators, Customer Service leadership, and Customer Service Representatives

  • Conduct structured quarterly one-on-one performance reviews with service leadership team members

  • Lead and support Field Service Managers and Field Training Supervisors through regular touchpoints and performance evaluations

  • Provide oversight of field service leads and technicians with a focus on technical excellence, career development, and performance improvement

Recruitment and Talent Development 

  • Partner with Human Resources to define staffing needs for the service department

  • Participate in applicant review, interview processes, and hiring decisions

  • Attend trade school and career recruitment events to support workforce pipeline development

  • Support technician performance reviews and development planning

Fleet and Asset Management 

  • Oversee fleet maintenance in coordination with shop or facilities personnel

  • Ensure standardized truck stock, proper tools, and safe operating conditions across all service vehicles

  • Conduct random vehicle inspections and monitor GPS alerts, addressing policy violations when necessary

  • Ensure all company-issued equipment is maintained in safe, working condition

Safety and Compliance 

  • Enforce company safety policies and procedures

  • Ensure technicians are deployed safely and adhere to established best practices in the field

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and compliance

Financial Performance and Reporting 

  • Manage and communicate monthly service billing and revenue performance

  • Review financial and operational reports and implement strategies to improve margins and efficiency

  • Be accountable for unbilled paid time and overall service department productivity

  • Manage employee performance metrics and KPI-based bonus structures

Service Contract and Payroll Oversight 

  • Support service contract renewals and new maintenance agreements on a recurring basis

  • Coordinate scheduled service visits in collaboration with account management teams

  • Approve service agreements, technician timesheets, time-off requests, and weekly GPS verification

Training and Continuous Improvement 

  • Assist in identifying and delivering technical and leadership training opportunities

  • Support documentation and tracking of on-the-job training and skill development

Required Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of experience in commercial HVAC service operations

  • 3 or more years of experience in a service management or leadership role

  • Strong understanding of commercial HVAC systems, service workflows, and field operations

  • Proven ability to manage teams, performance metrics, and financial results

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing service contracts and preventive maintenance programs

  • Background leading multi-layered teams including managers, supervisors, and technicians

  • Familiarity with GPS fleet systems and service management software

  • Demonstrated experience in technician training and workforce development
