Summary
The Chief Operating Officer (Operations & Projects) is a senior executive leadership role responsible for operational excellence, project profitability, and end-to-end delivery of complex HVAC controls projects. This leader oversees the full project lifecycle, from engineering and design through installation, turnover, and post-project analysis, while serving as a strategic partner to the CEO in scaling the organization’s operational capacity.
This role is central to building a high-performance execution engine that delivers consistent results, exceptional customer experiences, and sustainable profitability. The COO champions a culture where operational rigor, accountability, and continuous improvement are the standard, and where customer service is treated as a core strategic advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Operations & Project Leadership
• Profitability Management: Develop, maintain, and execute strategies that ensure consistent project profitability across all workstreams.
• Operational Planning: Oversee project planning, resource forecasting, and scheduling to align capacity with growth objectives.
• Engineering Re-Estimates: Lead re-forecasting efforts to proactively manage budgets, labor, and material costs.
• Process Excellence: Drive continuous improvement across project execution, documentation standards, internal workflows, and service delivery.
• Customer Relationship Management: Act as executive point-of-contact for key accounts, strengthening long-term partnerships and customer satisfaction.
Project Execution & Management
• Project Scheduling: Develop and maintain detailed project and labor schedules to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
• Team & Subcontractor Oversight: Lead installers, technicians, engineers, and subcontractors, including selection, performance management, and accountability.
• Project Lifecycle Oversight: Ensure disciplined execution across start-up, checkout, turnover, and postmortem phases.
• Change Management: Estimate labor and material impacts of change orders and oversee accurate, timely documentation and approvals.
• Meetings & Coordination: Represent operations in project meetings and coordinate closely with general contractors, engineers, and other trades to resolve issues collaboratively.
Project Engineering & Technical Development
• System Design: Participate in the design of HVAC temperature control systems, ensuring constructability, efficiency, and compliance with internal standards.
• Software Development: Oversee or contribute to the development and documentation of project databases, control programs, and graphics.
• Material Management: Guide equipment and material selection, manage procurement schedules, and approve requisitions.
• Technical Documentation: Ensure accurate, complete project submittals and technical documentation.
Training & Service Excellence
• Technical Training: Develop and execute structured training programs for technicians, engineers, and internal teams.
• Customer Training: Oversee customer training for new systems to ensure adoption, satisfaction, and long-term success.
• Service Documentation & Billing: Ensure service orders are properly documented and billed, including accurate labor and material estimates.
• Post-Installation Reviews: Lead postmortems to capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
• Senior leadership experience overseeing operations and large-scale project execution
• Deep understanding of HVAC controls, building automation systems, or related technical environments
• Proven ability to drive project profitability and operational scalability
• Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience scaling operations in a project driven or engineering led organization
• Hands on background in HVAC controls engineering or systems integration
• Track record of building training programs and standardized operating processes
• Experience serving as executive sponsor for strategic customer accounts
