Building Automation BAS Operations Supervisor/Lead Technician – Tampa Florida

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Operations Supervisor to lead a team of Project Engineers and Controls Technicians supporting complex Building Automation System (BAS) projects. This leadership role combines technical expertise, operational management, project execution, and employee development.
The successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring technical staff while maintaining direct involvement in project engineering, programming, commissioning, and customer support activities. It is anticipated that this position will spend approximately 25-40% of time on leadership and supervisory responsibilities, with the remainder focused on technical project execution.

Key Responsibilities
Required
Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Project Engineers and Controls Technicians.
  • Conduct performance reviews, career development meetings, and quarterly goal-setting sessions.
  • Develop individualized training and development plans for team members.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts.

Project Operations & Execution

  • Ensure proper engineering, programming, startup, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Provide overall fiscal responsibility for assigned projects.
  • Monitor project budgets, labor utilization, schedules, and performance metrics.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Manage labor planning and resource allocation across multiple projects.
  • Review technical deliverables to ensure quality and compliance.

Technical Leadership

  • Design and engineer control systems for HVAC and building automation applications.
  • Develop software programming, control sequences, graphics, and system integrations.
  • Analyze building control and mechanical system performance at both facility and campus levels.
  • Support advanced troubleshooting and system optimization efforts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering and field teams.

Operational Management

  • Assist in the development and implementation of department initiatives and strategic goals.
  • Identify operational efficiencies and process improvements.
  • Support forecasting, planning, and department performance objectives.

Qualifications
Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC Controls, or Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical personnel, projects, or field teams.
  • Strong knowledge of DDC (Direct Digital Control) theory and applications.
  • Experience with control system design, engineering, programming, startup, and commissioning.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills related to HVAC systems, controls, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, and labor resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally up to 30%.

Preferred

  • Associate degree in Applied Technology, Engineering Technology, HVAC, Electrical Technology, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Computer programming experience.
  • Experience supporting commercial, healthcare, higher education, industrial, or critical facilities.
  • Professional certifications related to BAS, controls, HVAC, or project management.

Work Environment

  • Full-time exempt position.
  • Typical Monday through Friday schedule with flexibility as needed.
  • Combination of office, remote, and field-based work.
  • Local travel up to 30% of the time.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
