Position Summary
The Building Automation Controls Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and supervising personnel, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure building automation projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Projects range from small retrofits to multi-million-dollar initiatives.
Under minimal supervision, this role manages scheduling for engineers, installers, technicians, and subcontractors while maintaining consistent communication with customers regarding project progress, timelines, and expectations. The Project Manager is accountable for financial performance, manpower planning, customer satisfaction, and operational execution across a portfolio of projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in job walks with sales teams prior to bidding retrofit projects
- Conduct weekly portfolio review meetings with operations leadership to assess margins, schedules, and performance
- Review and approve pre-bid documentation to ensure labor, materials, and scope are accurately covered
- Coordinate project turnover from office to field, including backlog tracking and manpower planning
- Identify, pursue, and document change orders resulting from scope discrepancies or schedule impacts
- Develop, maintain, and actively manage detailed project schedules
- Communicate deviations from plan and implement recovery strategies
- Monitor project financials weekly and initiate corrective actions as needed
- Schedule installers, technicians, and subcontractors based on site conditions and workload demands
- Coordinate with dispatch to keep field resources properly allocated and “right-sized”
- Attend and lead project meetings, job walks, and turnover meetings to monitor progress
- Ensure all project documentation complies with company policies and contractual requirements
- Complete project close-out documentation in accordance with internal and customer requirements
- Enforce safety standards and verify appropriate safety equipment is in place
- Supervise, mentor, and develop controls technicians and installers on HVAC systems and control concepts
- Conduct quarterly goal reviews and annual performance evaluations for field team members
- Assist leadership with workforce planning and staffing requirements
- Establish labor guidelines and recommend adjustments based on operational performance
- Understand purchasing requirements and oversee timely preparation of requisitions
- Direct staff in material, equipment, and subcontract procurement
- Prioritize work effectively by coordinating personnel and materials with dispatch
- Monitor billings regularly and take action to support strong cash flow
- Train and evaluate staff on accurate and timely completion of all required documentation
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing building automation controls projects
- Hands-on experience with building automation controls systems
- Strong financial management, project scheduling, and coordination skills
- Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets insurance requirements
- Reliable and punctual attendance
- Ability to supervise and lead field teams across multiple active projects
Preferred Qualifications
- 10 or more years of experience in building automation and energy services
- Experience managing portfolios that include multi-million-dollar projects
- Background in commercial HVAC controls, energy optimization, or system retrofits
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs from floor to waist and 50 lbs overhead
- Ability to carry up to 50 lbs for distances up to 25 feet
- Ability to push or pull up to 125 lbs for distances up to 500 feet
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access rooftops
- Ability to work with arms overhead, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work in confined spaces
- Ability to work at heights and in varying physical positions
- Ability to wear respiratory protection when required
- Vision correctable to 20/20 with no color blindness
- Hearing correctable to normal range
- Exposure to construction environments, mechanical systems, and potentially hazardous materials
Compensation and Benefits
- Target Base Salary: $105,000 – $115,000 annually
- Incentive Compensation: Performance-based incentives may apply
