Position Summary
The Building Automation Technician / Programmer serves as a senior technical expert responsible for programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimizing Building Automation Systems (BAS) in accordance with project plans, specifications, and design-build criteria. This role plays a critical part in delivering high-performance, cost-effective intelligent building solutions that exceed customer expectations.
This position acts as a technical leader for the field installation team, providing guidance on system design, integration, and commissioning. The role also evaluates existing and legacy control systems to determine integration feasibility or full system replacement, ensuring long-term reliability, scalability, and value for customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting of BAS and DDC control systems from standalone operation through full building network integration
- Participate in engineering release meetings and remain accountable to field teams for quality, timeliness, and system performance
- Serve as the technical authority for total system operation, including mechanical and HVAC system interactions
- Program, test, and configure programmable controllers, operator workstations, integrations, and network architectures
- Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, coordinating with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation
- Integrate and modernize legacy control systems where feasible; recommend replacement strategies when required
- Configure software, perform static and dynamic testing, and calibrate systems using electronic test equipment
- Produce accurate commissioning documentation and support creation of complete as-built records
- Conduct site-specific training for owners and operators and support smooth turnover to service teams
- Communicate proactively with project managers, customers, contractors, engineers, and consultants
- Identify system improvement opportunities and communicate customer feedback and concerns to management
- Lead, mentor, and support junior technicians and project staff
- Support BAS service calls and maintenance activities as part of the broader BAS team
- Maintain strict adherence to safety standards and promote a strong safety culture
- Continuously expand technical knowledge through self-study and vendor training, including occasional travel
Required Qualifications
- Niagara N4, AX, or Advanced N4/AX certification
- 8–10+ years of hands-on experience in building automation systems or DDC controls
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
- Demonstrated expertise in DDC programming, system integration, and network configuration
- Proven experience integrating legacy control systems
- Ability to independently perform system programming, testing, and commissioning
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to represent the company professionally
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Visio, Microsoft Office, and general PC-based tools
- Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional BAS, HVAC, or manufacturer-specific certifications
- Experience with building analytics platforms and data-driven system optimization
- Prior exposure to design-build project environments
- Experience supporting multiple BAS product lines and evaluating new technologies
