JOB TITLE: BAS Traveling Project Engineer / Programmer

POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced BAS Project Engineer / Programmer to support large-scale building automation and controls projects throughout the United States. This role combines engineering, controls programming, commissioning, and customer-facing project support for mission-critical facilities, commercial buildings, and emerging data center projects.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of mechanical systems and building operations, can independently program multiple control platforms from scratch, and is comfortable interacting directly with customers, contractors, and project stakeholders throughout all phases of project execution.
This is a highly autonomous role designed for an experienced professional who can hit the ground running, manage priorities independently, and provide technical leadership both remotely and in the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, configure, program, and commission Building Automation Systems for commercial and industrial facilities.
- Develop control sequences and program BAS platforms from scratch.
- Perform startup, testing, troubleshooting, and system commissioning activities.
- Interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate directly with customers, contractors, and project teams throughout project execution.
- Support field technicians during installation and startup activities.
- Conduct site visits to verify installations and ensure proper system functionality.
- Modify and optimize control strategies to improve building performance and energy efficiency.
- Generate and maintain project documentation, graphics, and operational sequences.
- Assist with integration of HVAC, mechanical, and ancillary building systems.
- Participate in project meetings, customer trainings, and turnover activities.
- Maintain high levels of customer communication and professionalism throughout project delivery.
- Travel to project locations as required to support commissioning and project completion.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 5+ years of Building Automation Systems experience.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, and overall building operations.
- Ability to understand complete building design and mechanical system layouts.
- Experience reading and interpreting control drawings, mechanical plans, wiring diagrams, and specifications.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Visio sufficient to review and interpret project drawings.
- Advanced programming experience with:
- Schneider Electric
- Johnson Controls (JCI)
- Automated Logic (ALC)
- Distech Controls
- Ability to create controller programming from scratch without reliance on templates.
- Experience performing system startup, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Phoenix Controls systems.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs.
- Energy Services or Energy Performance Contracting experience.
- Data Center controls experience.
- Niagara certification or experience.
- Experience with critical environments, healthcare, pharmaceutical, laboratory, or mission-critical facilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates located in the Boca Raton, Florida area can expect approximately 25% travel.
- Candidates located outside the Florida market should expect travel up to 100% based on project assignments.
- Current and future projects include opportunities supporting data center, commercial, and mission-critical facilities across multiple states, including Texas and New York.
- Travel schedules may vary based on commissioning and project startup requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Combination of remote work, office engineering, customer meetings, and field commissioning activities.
- Regular work in mechanical rooms, control panels, equipment spaces, and active construction environments.
- Ability to climb ladders and access building equipment when necessary.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Personal protective equipment required during jobsite visits.
