Job Location: Greater Chicago, IL and Baltimore, MD (approximately 50% time in each location)

Job Summary
The Building Automation Traveling Project Manager is responsible for leading the successful delivery of complex building automation and controls projects across two major metropolitan markets. This role blends technical expertise, customer leadership, and operational rigor to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to exacting quality standards. The position requires significant travel, strong stakeholder management skills, and the ability to oversee multiple concurrent projects in mission-critical environments such as healthcare, higher education, government, and large commercial facilities.

Key Responsibilities (Required)

  • Manage the full project lifecycle for building automation and controls projects, from kickoff through commissioning and closeout
  • Spend approximately 50% of working time supporting projects in the Chicago, IL market and 50% in the Baltimore, MD market
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, subcontractors, internal engineering teams, and field technicians
  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, budgets, forecasts, and resource plans for projects typically ranging from $500K to $5M+
  • Oversee scope management, change orders, risk mitigation, and cost control to protect project margins
  • Coordinate system integration efforts involving BAS platforms, HVAC systems, lighting controls, metering, and energy management systems
  • Lead project meetings, including client updates, internal coordination calls, and on-site progress reviews
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, quality control requirements, and contractual obligations
  • Support commissioning activities and ensure all systems meet performance specifications prior to handover

Qualifications
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years of project management experience in building automation, controls, or related MEP systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-site or traveling project assignments
  • Strong understanding of BAS platforms, control system architecture, and construction workflows
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and client expectations simultaneously
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently between Chicago and Baltimore

Preferred

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Experience with large institutional clients such as healthcare systems, universities, or public sector organizations
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency, retrofits, and system modernization projects
  • Experience managing teams of 5–15 project engineers, technicians, and subcontractors
