Position Overview
The Building Automation Design Engineer is responsible for developing engineering drawings and complete submittal packages for building automation system (BAS) projects. This role supports the successful execution of projects by collaborating with project managers, sales teams, field specialists, installers, customers, and consulting engineers. The position focuses on delivering accurate, high-quality, and well-documented engineering solutions that meet project specifications, customer standards, and budgetary requirements.
Major Responsibilities
- Develop detailed engineering drawings and BAS submittal packages in accordance with project specifications, construction documents, proposals, and estimates.
- Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, clearly organized, and easy to interpret for internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Maintain and apply customer specific engineering standards related to system architecture, global networks, and future system expansions.
- Archive engineering deliverables electronically following established documentation standards.
- Provide engineering and technical support to project managers, sales teams, field specialists, installers, customers, and consulting engineers.
- Assist field personnel with technical coordination, troubleshooting, and resolution of engineering related issues during installation and startup.
- Visit job sites to evaluate existing BAS and HVAC systems and determine the most effective engineering approach.
- Perform peer reviews of engineering deliverables to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with standards.
- Facilitate the transition from engineering to field execution by providing updated project documentation, scope clarification, and design intent.
- Deliver a complete turnkey system package to support technicians in the development of end-user software and commissioning activities.
- Assist in maintaining and updating engineering standards, templates, and libraries.
- Participate in technical discussions and contribute to resolving complex system and integration challenges.
- Communicate clearly and consistently with internal teams and external customers.
- Ensure work is completed on time, within budget, and in alignment with quality expectations.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, safety plans, and HR guidelines.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Solid understanding of HVAC DDC controls theory, applications, and systems
- High attention to detail with strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and without direct supervision
- Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities
Preferred
- Experience supporting large-scale or multi-site building automation projects
- Familiarity with interoperable or system agnostic BAS platforms
- Experience coordinating with field teams during installation and commissioning
Qualifications and Experience
- Engineering undergraduate degree, AA degree in Applied Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
- Knowledge of construction practices and HVAC systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and Windows operating systems
- Strong understanding of HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems
Preferred
- Prior experience designing or supporting building automation systems
- Exposure to networked or enterprise level BAS environments
