About the Role
This role is responsible for producing accurate cost estimates for building automation system projects. The estimator will review drawings, plans, specifications, and equipment requirements to develop pricing that supports internal engineering, project management, and sales teams. Because this is the first dedicated estimator for the organization, the person stepping into this position will have the opportunity to influence future processes and play a key role in shaping the growth of the estimating function.

Key Responsibilities
Required

  • Review engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to determine project scope.
  • Perform equipment counts, material takeoffs, and labor estimates.
  • Generate detailed and accurate cost estimates for building automation projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and sales teams to validate estimating assumptions.
  • Prepare proposals, budgetary estimates, and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain organized estimate files, pricing data, and standardized cost templates.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of estimating tools and processes.

 

Preferred

  • Participate in scope review meetings or RFP discussions as needed.
  • Recommend value engineered alternatives to improve competitiveness.
  • Provide technical clarification to non-technical stakeholders, when appropriate.

 

Required Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of experience in building automation, controls, mechanical systems, or related engineering fields.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Understanding of building automation components, control strategies, and system architecture.
  • Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.
  • Clear communication skills and comfort working cross functionally.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience specifically in estimating (not required).
  • Familiarity with major BAS platforms such as Niagara, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or similar.
  • Engineering degree in mechanical, electrical, or related discipline.
  • Background in energy, automation, or performance-contracting environments.
  • Interest in progressing into engineering, sales engineering, or estimating leadership roles.
