Position Summary
The Building Automation Project Manager / Project Engineer oversees the delivery of building automation system (BAS) projects from concept through completion. This role ensures that automation systems are planned, designed, installed, integrated, and commissioned with precision.
Depending on experience, this position may include design work, such as developing control diagrams, sequences of operation, and integration strategies. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and customer-focused service.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management (Required)
- Manage building automation projects from planning and design through installation, commissioning, and turnover.
- Maintain project schedules, material procurement, cost control, and resource coordination.
- Collaborate with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and integration teams to ensure whole building system compatibility.
- Oversee subcontractors and vendors to ensure quality workmanship and contract compliance.
- Provide project updates to internal teams, stakeholders, and customers.
- Conduct on-site visits to verify progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure installation accuracy.
- Lead project close-out activities, including documentation, testing, and client handoff.
Engineering & Design Responsibilities (Preferred, May Be Included)
- Create or assist in creating BAS design documents, including:
- Control architecture
- Wiring diagrams and device layouts
- Sequences of operation
- Third-party system integration plans
- Review construction drawings and specifications for alignment with control strategies.
- Support field technicians with programming, commissioning, and system optimization.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a primary point of contact for customers, contractors, and facility teams.
- Identify solutions that improve comfort, energy efficiency, and operational performance.
- Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Quality, Safety, and Operational Excellence
- Ensure all work adheres to industry standards, safety requirements, and internal quality expectations.
- Evaluate project designs for cost effectiveness and operational efficiency.
- Promote craftsmanship and accountability across all project phases.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in building automation, HVAC controls, mechanical systems, or related fields.
- Proven project management experience with commercial mechanical or controls projects.
- Understanding of HVAC systems, electrical fundamentals, and building operations.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications.
- Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with BAS design
- Familiarity with common automation platforms (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Trane, Delta, Distech, Honeywell).
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.
- Experience with design-build or retrofit project environments.
- Knowledge of energy management systems, indoor air quality, and efficiency optimization.
