Building Automation Senior Design/Application Engineer – Columbus Ohio

Job Title: Building Automation Senior Design/Application Engineer
Job Location: Greater Columbus, OH Area
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role
This position plays a critical role in delivering high performance building environments by developing, programming, integrating, and commissioning Building Automation Systems (BAS) across a wide range of facilities. You will help bring energy-efficient, responsive, and reliable building systems to life—supporting design/build projects, retrofits, engineering services, security integrations, lighting controls, and temperature-control solutions.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives on technical problem-solving, system optimization, and delivering rapid, high-quality service in support of modern building technologies.

Why This Role Matters
Building automation is the backbone of modern facility performance—driving comfort, energy efficiency, security, and operational reliability. In this role, you directly influence the sustainability and performance of commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. You’ll work with advanced technologies, diverse system types, and evolving digital building trends, providing continuous opportunities for learning and technical advancement.

Job Responsibilities

  • Program, configure, and commission Building Automation Systems (HVAC controls, energy management systems, temperature controls).
  • Develop control logic, sequences of operation, and functional testing protocols for HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Support design/build and plan & spec project delivery by interpreting engineering documents and ensuring controls are implemented to specification.
  • Integrate BAS with subsystems such as security, card access, intrusion detection, digital video systems, and lighting/dimming networks.
  • Perform on-site startup, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and system verification.
  • Create and maintain documentation including point lists, as-built programming files, sequence narratives, and change logs.
  • Provide rapid-response service support and participate in scheduled on-call rotations for urgent building controls issues.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, installers, project managers, and service technicians to deliver accurate and timely results.
  • Ensure all work complies with safety standards, project requirements, and energy-efficiency objectives.
  • Assist engineering teams with energy analysis, load calculations, or system optimization strategies.
  • Contribute to equipment selection discussions by identifying controls requirements and integration needs.
  • Support security and access control integrators by configuring interfaces between BAS and low-voltage systems.
  • Provide input during design/build planning to help streamline controls architecture and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance programs, inspections, and system performance reviews.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience programming or commissioning BAS platforms (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Honeywell, Distech, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider Electric, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC equipment, mechanical systems, temperature control strategies, and energy management principles.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings to implement functional systems.
  • Working knowledge of BAS communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus) and IP networking fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability across control, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, automation, electrical technology, or a related field.
  • Certifications such as Tridium Niagara N4, Honeywell, Siemens, or other BAS manufacturer credentials.
  • Experience with security and access systems, lighting controls, digital video solutions, or energy engineering.
  • Familiarity with design/build environments or retrofit project execution.
  • 5–10 years of experience in building automation or related mechanical/electrical fields.
