This role combines technical expertise, consultative selling, and relationship management to help clients improve building performance while achieving their financial and operational objectives.
As an HVAC Project Sales Engineer, you will work directly with building owners, facility managers, property managers, and decision-makers to identify opportunities, develop tailored solutions, and drive project success from concept through close.
Key Responsibilities
Required
- Consult with existing and prospective customers on HVAC system replacement, retrofit, modernization, and energy conservation projects.
- Perform site surveys and equipment assessments to identify project opportunities.
- Develop project estimates, proposals, and presentations that address customer goals and operational needs.
- Provide consultative sales solutions related to design-build projects, HVAC upgrades, controls integration, and energy-efficient technologies.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project management teams to develop accurate project scopes and pricing.
- Manage the sales process from lead generation through project award and handoff.
- Maintain strong customer relationships and identify opportunities for repeat business and account growth.
- Meet or exceed established sales, revenue, and gross profit objectives.
- Understand and communicate project financial impacts including cash flow, payback analysis, ROI, lifecycle cost comparisons, and lease versus purchase options.
- Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and local market conditions.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum three (3) years of direct HVAC sales experience or sales experience in a related mechanical, energy, building systems, or construction industry.
- Alternatively, a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a field service technician in the HVAC industry.
- Experience performing heating and cooling load calculations.
- Experience selling HVAC mechanical solutions, equipment upgrades, or energy conservation projects.
- Strong negotiating, closing, prospecting, and networking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to identify customer needs, overcome potential objections, and develop persuasive, value-driven solutions.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally within the assigned territory.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Prior HVAC project sales experience in commercial or industrial markets. HVAC project sales experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
- Experience with design-build delivery methods.
- Knowledge of energy conservation measures, building automation systems, and facility optimization strategies.
- Experience utilizing CRM platforms, estimating software, and Microsoft Office applications.
