Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Building Automation Controls Technician who can independently manage projects from initial diagnosis through completion. This position is ideal for a seasoned professional who possesses both strong mechanical HVAC expertise and building automation controls experience.
Unlike many organizations where project managers handle customer communication, scheduling, materials, and administrative tasks, this role requires a technician who can manage customer relationships, coordinate project activities, communicate professionally, and drive project success with minimal supervision.
Required Responsibilities
- Diagnose and troubleshoot large commercial HVAC equipment and building automation systems.
- Determine whether operational issues are mechanical, electrical, or controls-related.
- Program, install, commission, and maintain building automation control systems.
- Support both new construction and retrofit projects.
- Manage projects from start to finish, including planning and execution.
- Communicate directly with building owners, facility managers, and customers.
- Create estimates and coordinate project-related documentation.
- Schedule work activities and manage daily priorities independently.
- Order and coordinate required materials and equipment.
- Troubleshoot and service a variety of building automation platforms.
- Work in field environments including rooftops, mechanical rooms, and attics.
- Maintain professional customer relationships and provide technical recommendations.
- Operate with minimal day-to-day oversight while maintaining accountability for project outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- 5 to 10+ years of field experience in building automation controls, HVAC controls, commercial HVAC service, or related disciplines.
- Strong knowledge of large commercial HVAC equipment, chillers, air handlers, VAV systems, and mechanical systems.
- Experience programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing building automation systems.
- Ability to independently manage projects and customer interactions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience preparing estimates and project documentation.
- Ability to organize workload and priorities without constant supervision.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ASI Controls systems.
- Experience with Trane, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Alerton, Delta Controls, Distech, or other major BAS platforms.
- Experience mentoring technicians or apprentices.
- Previous project management responsibilities.
- Strong service and installation background.
- Experience working across multiple controls platforms and manufacturers.
Work Environment
- Primarily field-based role supporting commercial and industrial facilities.
- Projects include service, retrofit, renovation, and new construction work.
- Frequent work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, equipment yards, and occupied commercial facilities.
- Service territory spans Central Florida and surrounding markets.
- Candidates should reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Orlando area.
